To replace the valve stem seals, you will need: all the tools needed to remove the timing belt and its pulley (see «Replacing the cylinder head gasket»), end head «at 13». Additionally, you will need a tin bar with a diameter of about 8 mm (e.g. solder), tweezers, screwdriver, mandrel for pressing oil seals, oil seal and valve spring removers.
1. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.
2. Remove the toothed pulley from the camshaft (see «Replacing the cylinder head gasket»).
3. Remove the head cover (see «Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket»).
4. Disconnect the wire harness connector from the phase sensor by depressing its retainer.
5. Turn out a bolt and turn away two nuts of fastening of a back cover of a head of the block of cylinders.
Note. Please note that a rubber o-ring is installed under the bolt head. Replace a severely compressed, hardened or torn ring.
6. Remove the cylinder head cover by sliding it back and turning it so that the phase sensor setting pin pressed into the camshaft matches the groove in the cover.
7. Turn away evenly four nuts of fastening of forward 1 and six nuts of fastening of back 2 cases of bearings of a camshaft and remove washers. Then remove both housings.
8. If the key in the groove of the camshaft is loose, remove it so as not to lose it.
9. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
10. Remove the oil seal from the camshaft.
11. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston corresponding to the valve stem seals to be replaced is at top dead center. With the 1st cylinder spark plug removed, insert a tin rod through the spark plug hole between the piston and exhaust valve (so that the valve does not fall down).
12. Remove the tappet of the exhaust valve of the 1st cylinder together with the adjusting washer (cm «Valve lifter replacement»).
13. Install the valve spring compressor on the exhaust valve springs of the 1st cylinder, as shown in the photo. Use a nut without a serrated collar. Squeeze the valve spring remover.
14. Remove two crackers with tweezers. Then remove the valve spring remover.
15. Take out the top plate of springs, internal and external springs of the valve.
16. Press the valve stem seal off the valve guide.
17. To do this, install the collet of the valve stem seal remover on the cap...
18.... and sharply hit the fixture sleeve with the striker. Then just as sharply hit the striker of the handle of the device...
19.... thereby pressing the valve stem seal off the bushing. Remove the oil scraper cap from the tool collet.
20. Before installing new valve stem seals, it is recommended to remove the springs from them, otherwise the valve stem seals can be damaged when they pass through the grooves for crackers on the valves.
21. Dip the valve stem seal in engine oil and insert it into the mandrel.
22. Carefully press the valve stem seal all the way into the bottom plate.
23. Install the spring on the valve stem seal if it was removed.
24. Install the springs and valve disc in the reverse order of removal. Install the crackers with a puller so that they fit into the grooves of the valve stem. Remove the tin rod from the candle hole.
25. Establish a pusher of the valve together with an adjusting washer.
26. Similarly, replace the valve stem seals of the exhaust valve of the 1st cylinder and both valves of the 4th cylinder.
27. Keeping the timing belt taut, turn the crankshaft half a turn and replace the valve stem seals of the 2nd and 3rd cylinders.
28. After replacing all valve stem seals, turn the crankshaft another half turn.
29. Lubricate with engine oil the camshaft bearings in the block head and the adjusting washers of the pushers.
30. Install the camshaft in the cylinder head bearings so that the cams of the 1st cylinder are directed away from the valve lifters.
31. Lubricate the necks and camshaft cams with engine oil.
32. Apply sealant to the cylinder head in the area of the extreme camshaft bearings.
33. Install the camshaft bearing housings, put washers on the studs and tighten the fastening nuts in two stages in the order shown:
- tighten the nuts until the bearing housings touch the surface of the cylinder head, while making sure that...
... the guide bushings entered the bores of the bearing housings.
Finally tighten the nuts in the sequence shown.
34. Install the camshaft oil seal (see «Camshaft oil seal replacement»).
35. Check valve clearances and adjust valve clearances if necessary (see «Valve clearance adjustment»).
36. Install all removed parts on the car, connect the hoses and wires in the reverse order of removal.
