Camshaft oil seal replacement

If an oil leak is detected through the camshaft oil seal, first check if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged and if the hoses of this system are pinched, repair if necessary. If the oil leak does not stop, replace the camshaft oil seal.

To replace the camshaft oil seal on a car, you will need a flat-bladed screwdriver.

1. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.

2. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position (see «Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke»).

3. Remove the camshaft pulley (see «Replacing the cylinder head gasket»).

4. Remove the key from the camshaft.



5. Using a screwdriver, remove the camshaft seal.



6. Before installing a new camshaft oil seal, inspect the working edge of the oil seal 1. It should be flat, without tears, dents and rubber sagging. The gland spring must be intact and unstretched. Lubricate the lip of the camshaft oil seal with engine oil.




7. Install the camshaft oil seal with the working edge inside the cylinder head, carefully fill the working edge of the oil seal on the camshaft with a wooden stick and press it in to the stop using a suitable mandrel.

8. Establish on the car all details in an order, the return to removal. Install the camshaft pulley with the protruding part of the hub towards the engine. Adjust the tension of the camshaft drive belt (see «Timing Belt Tension Adjustment (camshaft drive)»).
