Replacing the fuel tank and its filler pipe

If you find a leak of gasoline from the gas tank, it is recommended to replace the fuel tank on the car. If the fuel pump screen often becomes clogged, remove and flush the gas tank.

If a gasoline leak is detected along the junction line of the upper and lower parts of the gas tank, these places can be soldered (work is recommended to be carried out in specialized auto repair shops). To do this, drain the remaining gasoline, thoroughly rinse and dry the gas tank. Then solder the leak with soft solder.

It is more convenient to remove an empty gas tank while working on a lift, overpass or viewing hole.

To replace the fuel tank (gas tank) by car you will need: a key «on 10», flat and Phillips screwdrivers.

1. Reduce the pressure in the engine power system (see «Reduced fuel pressure in the engine power system»).

2. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.

3. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the fuel pump (see «Removal and installation of the fuel pump (fuel pump)»).



4. Turn away three nuts of fastening of the protective screen of a gas tank and remove the screen.




5. If necessary remove from a body an arm of fastening of a protective screen.



6. Having pressed the spring clips, disconnect the tips of the hoses installed on the gas tank from the fuel line fittings.



7. Disconnect the gravity valve hose from the gas tank hose in the same way.




8. Loosen the clamp fastening the connecting hose of the filling pipe and disconnect the hose from the gas tank pipe.



9. Disconnect the hose of the air outlet pipeline of the filling pipe from the fitting at the rear of the gas tank by depressing the spring clip of its tip.

10. Install a support under the gas tank.



11. Turn out two bolts of collars of fastening of a gas tank, take away collars forward and remove a gas tank from the car.


12. If necessary, remove the fuel tank clamp.



13. In case of replacing the gas tank, rearrange the parts and assemblies installed on the old gas tank to the new gas tank. After loosening the fastening clamp, remove the connecting hose of the inlet pipe from the nozzle.

14. Remove the fuel pump from the gas tank (see «Removal and installation of the fuel pump (fuel pump)»).

15. Remove the adsorber of the evaporative emission system (see «Replacement of components of the gasoline vapor recovery system»), fuel filter (see «Fuel filter replacement») and connecting pipelines.

16. Establish on the car a gas tank and all removed details in an order, the return to removal.

Fuel filler pipe if necessary, it can be removed from the car separately without removing the gas tank, as follows.

1. Remove the plug from the filler neck (see «Refueling a car with gasoline»).



2. Loosen the clamps for fastening the air outlet and connecting hoses.




3. Disconnect the fuel drain hose from the separator from the fitting of the filling pipe of the gas tank by loosening the clamp of its fastening.



4. Turn out a bolt of fastening of an arm of a bulk pipe of a gas tank to a body.



5. Remove the air outlet tube and the filling pipe of the gas tank neck from the hoses...



6.... remove the upper end of the filler pipe of the gas tank neck together with the seal from the hole in the body and remove the filler pipe from the vehicle.



7. Before installation, remove the rubber seal from the filling pipe. Replace hardened or cracked seal.



8. Install the rubber seal in the hole from inside the body...



9.... and fill its shoulder on the edge of the hole on the side of the hatch in the wing of the car.

10. Further establish a bulk pipe of a mouth of a gas tank in an order, the return to removal.
