Engine and transmission oils differ in smell. With a certain skill, it can be used to determine which of the oil seals is defective.
Note. There is another way to determine the type of oil. Drop oil into water, poured in a thin layer into a container. Transmission oil will spread over the entire surface of the water in the form of an iridescent film, and engine oil will remain in the form of a drop similar to a lentil grain.
You will need: a screwdriver with a straight blade, a mandrel.
1. Remove the gearbox (see «Removal and installation of a transmission»).
2. Remove the clutch (see «Removal and installation of clutch»).
3. Remove the flywheel (see «Removal, troubleshooting and installation of the flywheel»).
4. Inspect the gland. If it has lost its tightness, an oil leak will be visible in its lower part.
5. Using a screwdriver, remove the gland.
6. Lubricate the working edge of the new oil seal with engine oil, install it in the seat of the cylinder block, orienting the working edge inside the engine, and carefully fill the working edge onto the crankshaft journal.
7. Press the gland into the socket until it stops, using a suitable mandrel.
8. Install the removed units in the reverse order of removal.
Note. When installing the flywheel, lubricate the threaded part of the bolts of its fastening with a thread locking compound «Loctite» or any similar anaerobic threadlocker.
