When trying to start the engine, the crankshaft does not rotate
1. Engine start blocked by anti-theft system (immobilizer). Ignition key code not recognized, immobilizer warning light flashes on instrument panel (see «Dashboard»). It is not possible to start the engine when using an unregistered ignition key, while on a car with «electronic key» the ignition cannot be switched on. In case it is used «native» car key, remove foreign objects from the ignition key and from the ignition lock that may interfere with reading the code (a bunch of other keys, a key chain, etc.). If after this the start of the engine remains blocked, you should contact a specialized service station. It is possible that there is a source of radiation near the car that makes it difficult to recognize the ignition key. In this case, if the car is towed out of the radiation zone, the engine can be started.
2. Insufficiently tightened or oxidized terminals on the battery terminals. Check the condition of the terminals, clean them if necessary and tighten the fastening nuts (see «Accumulator battery»).
3. The battery is low or defective. Check the condition of the battery, charge it, replace the faulty one. After connecting the terminals, coat them and the battery terminals with a special compound or any grease (see «Accumulator battery»).
4. Faulty starter circuit. Check the power circuit, the condition of the electrical connections (see «Starter»), Replace damaged wires, clean oxidized tips and terminals, treat with a cleaner and protect electrical contacts. Tighten screw connections to the specified tightening torque.
5. Defective starter solenoid. Replace faulty relay or starter assembly (see «Starter»).
6. Faulty starter. Repair it or replace it (see «Starter»).
7. Faulty switch (lock) ignition. Replace defective part.
The crankshaft rotates but the engine does not start (engine starts but immediately stops)
1. Engine start blocked by immobilizer. Disable the car's security system. If after this the start of the engine remains blocked, you should contact a specialized service station.
2. No fuel in the tank (check the readings of the fuel level sensor, in case of malfunction, replace it).
3. The crankshaft does not rotate fast enough to start the engine due to a low charge of the battery or oxidized terminals on its terminals. Check the condition of the terminals, clean them if necessary and tighten the fastening nuts. Check the condition of the battery, charge it, replace the faulty one (cm «Accumulator battery»). After connecting the terminals, coat them and the battery terminals with a special compound or any grease.
4. Malfunction of elements of the fuel supply system. Inspection to check the tightness of the fuel supply system, check the pressure in the fuel supply system, the malfunction of the fuel injectors and the fuel module (see «Power system - check of technical condition»). Replace defective parts.
5. Leakage of connections of the inlet pipeline. Replace the seals in the detachable connections of the intake manifold.
6. Faulty engine management system. Run diagnostics on the engine management system (see «Checking the technical condition of the engine management system»). Replace defective elements.
7. The ignition coil or its electrical circuit is faulty. Check the power circuit, the condition of the electrical connectors. Treat oxidized terminals with a cleaning and protection agent for electrical contacts. Run diagnostics on the engine management system (see «Checking the technical condition of the engine management system»). Replace defective part.
8. Faulty crankshaft position sensor (see «Crankshaft position sensor - replacement»).
9. Low compression in the engine cylinders. Checked the technical condition of the engine (see «Engine - condition check»). Repair the engine by replacing worn and defective parts.
